Off with their Mosquito Heads!

Nothing ruins an outdoor evening in the summertime quite like mosquitoes buzzing around and biting everyone. These itchy bumps can easily be avoided if you simply spray your yard area with a mosquito treatment. There are several different types of outdoor mosquito treatments to choose from. Be sure that the repellent you select is specifically labeled for outdoor use.

Residual Barrier Spray
Mix the residual barrier spray with water as directed on the package. Pour the diluted product into a hand pump sprayer.

Spray the insecticide in shaded, damp and cool areas. These are the areas that mosquitoes commonly remain in during the heat of the day. For example, spray underneath a porch, in tall grass underneath trees, along the edges of your property or along a fence line.

Reapply the spray as directed on the package. These sprays can generally last about two weeks.

Aerosol Barrier Spray
Follow instructions on the label with regard to shaking the can of aerosol barrier spray in preparation for use.

Spray the aerosol spray directly on the vegetation you wish to treat. During hot days, spray it in cool, damp, shady areas of your lawn to reduce the mosquito population.

Reapply the aerosol barrier spray at least a few hours and no more than a day before you plan to use your lawn area.

Another mosquito prevention technique is by using natural repellents. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. Getting Rid of Mosquitoes Around your Home

Mosquitoes are some of the most annoying creatures in the planet and finding a way to rid your yard and home of them is always a challenge. Using harsh chemicals and dangerous foggers are options that might work for a while but at a potential health risk to the people and animals in the surrounding area. The insect repellant industry market heavily the products containing DEET but these products can make you feel oily and smell unpleasant. I will give you a new suggestion and some steps to take to make it work. This suggestion if done correctly will give good results and you will get rid of mosquitoes around your home.

The first thing you need to do is mow the grass in your lawn. The mosquitoes thrive in high grass. It shades them from the hot sun in the day. Clean up the yard around your home. Make sure there is no place where water can accumulate. If there is any old flower pots or buckets that have water in them the mosquitoes will use this water as a breading ground and it will be much more difficult to rid your yard of these mosquitoes. Trim any plants or bushes so the mosquitoes don't have a place to hide from the sun in the day.

The second thing you should do is go to any local super market like Wal-Mart, Target, or Walgreens and purchases a few bottles of Listerine Mouthwash. Get the large ones. You don't have to get the brand name mouthwash, both Target and Walgreens carry a product that is exactly like Listerine Mouthwash but it is the store brand and that will work also. The best mouthwash to use for mosquitoes is the original one not the flavored one. While you are at the supermarket also buy a good spray bottle. Get one that can spray direct and also mist you will need them both.

The third thing you should do is pour the mouthwash in the spray bottle and begin spraying the area around the house. Make sure you get under the bushes and shrubs. If you plan to have an outdoors gathering spray all around the area people will congregate and also the grass and all the yard. The mosquitoes do not like the smell of the mouthwash and they will stay away. Many people have tried this and it has been said to work. I tried it and I know it works. Don't hesitate to try it. Also the Mouthwash is much less expensive than most all-insect repellants.

Aside from this, a good mosquito repellent band is also a good option. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. Mosquitoes, including ticks, fleas, gnats, etc., will hate you for wearing this band. It has a formula that offers the best balanced proportion of 11 natural, organic essential oils and repels mosquitoes and fleas, gnats, ticks, ants and more! With this product, you get real protection without the use of dangerous sprays or powders!

Burned Coffee Grounds as a Mosquito Repellent

Reusing coffee grounds offers benefits from fertilizing plants to repelling mosquitoes. Coffee grounds have a smoldering effect after you light them that keeps insects at bay. Also, reusing coffee grounds saves money. Some people use coffee grounds in a compost pile to feed worms and keep other insects away, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Mosquitoes, like other insects, are repelled by the odor created from the coffee grounds burning.

Remove the coffee grounds from your coffeemaker and put them in an aluminum foil pie plate. Place them in a cool, dry area until they are completely dry.

Place the foil plate with the coffee grounds on a level surface, such as a table, outdoors. Make sure no animals or children have access to the area.

Add a few drops of barbecue lighter fluid to the coffee grounds. Do not saturate the grounds--this makes them burn too quickly.

Light the fluid with a long match to avoid getting burned. Then, allow the lighter fluid to burn off until the coffee grounds start burning and smoking.

Smother the fire with a large, damp towel or cloth by placing it over the top of the plate. The coffee grounds should continue to smoke and smolder. The smoke from the coffee grounds repels the mosquitoes.

Indeed, one of the best and effective mosquito prevention technique is by using natural repellents. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. It contains an all-natural,non-spray & DEET-free formula. Do It Yourself: Mosquito Net Bed Canopy

Mosquito net bed canopies can give ordinary bedrooms a romantic touch. These non-functional canopies, which are often assembled on bamboo rings, are easy to put together and their neutral color goes with just about any decor. This pattern only requires some basic sewing skills. These canopies can help you avoid mosquito bites.

Set up a step stool next to the bed and measure with a tape measure the distance from the ceiling to the point where the canopy should hit. Some people prefer that the canopy hit the floor, while others are content to let it settle just below the top of the bed.

Measure and cut the mosquito net to the proper length, leaving an additional couple of inches on the bottom for a hem. Lay the material flat on the ground and bunch the top of it around the bamboo hoop to gauge whether it is too wide. The cloth should lay in folds when suspended, but it should also be able to be drawn back about halfway like curtains. Trim away some material from the width, if necessary.

Attach a 4-point light fixture chain to spots on the inside of the bamboo ring. Make sure the chains are spaced evenly to allow the canopy to hang straight from the ceiling.

Pin up and hem the top, bottom and sides of the net with a needle and thread. Draw the top edge up over the bamboo ring to the main chain suspended from the ring. Center the material's opening between 2 of the points on the light fixture chain, then gather the cloth into a point and secure the top edge of the material to the chain with a needle and thread. The canopy will look like a turret, with the material flowing from the pointed top down over the ring to the floor.

Screw a ceiling hook into the spot where the canopy will be suspended. The canopy would look great centered either over the mattress or over the headboard. Make sure there is ample space for the bamboo ring to hang straight from the ceiling.

Hang the bed canopy from the hook by the central chain. Fluff out the material, parting it in front.

Another mosquito prevention technique is by using natural repellents. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. Ways to Repel Mosquitoes Without a Spray

While sucking out blood, the mosquito injects its saliva, which is what causes those itchy small bumps. Mosquitoes can be very annoying pests, especially when you are trying to enjoy the outdoors. The chemicals in mosquito repellent sprays are not 100% safe, as they are chemicals that you spray directly onto your skin. But, you can keep mosquitoes away without using any sprays.

Set up mosquito netting in the area where you spend most of your time at night. The mosquito netting keeps the mosquitoes out and protects you from being bitten.

Plant any of the following plants in your yard: ageratum, basil, garlic, thyme, daisies, spearmint, peppermint, catnip, rosemary, marigolds, eucalyptus, horsemint, cedar, verbena, or lemon grass. The odors from these plants is repulsive to mosquitoes.

Wear long sleeves and long pants when outdoors. Mosquitoes cannot penetrate through materials, and thus cannot bite you.

Refrain from wearing any perfume or cologne or scented body lotion when outdoors. The sweet smell attracts mosquitoes.

Burn citronella candles when you are outside, as mosquitoes are repulsed by the scent. Try to surround yourself with citronella candles.

Refrain from exercising at night. Mosquitoes are highly attracted to sweat.

Rub lemon eucalyptus oil on yourself; the scent repels mosquitoes. Lemon eucalyptus can be bought at most health food stores.

Remove any stagnant water from the area. Mosquitoes thrive and reproduce in warm, humid, and dark areas. Having stagnant water around provides the perfect location for them to breed.
Another mosquito prevention technique is by using natural repellents. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. Managing a Mosquito-Free Yard

Even without the threat of West Nile Virus, mosquitoes are annoying and hard to deal with. In order to keep them out of your home and away from your yard, there's a series of steps you can take to get rid of them.
  • Get rid of anything that holds water. Mosquitoes breed in warm, humid areas with even small amounts of water. Put mosquito rings containing BTI, a bacteria that kills mosquito larvae, in ponds, puddles, bird baths and water barrels. Change water in children's wading pools and bird baths once or twice a week. Empty gardening cans, tarps, garbage cans, buckets, tires, flower pots, toys, car and boat covers and wheelbarrows.
  • Cut your grass short when mowing and remove all weeds. Trim shrubs and bushes, and clean out gutters. Smooth ruts and fill holes in your yard that can fill with water to form puddles. Rake leaves as they can hold enough water for mosquitoes to breed in.
  • Plant a border around your yard of catnip, garlic, onions, lemon thyme, lemon grass, citronella grass, marigolds, rosemary and basil to repel mosquitoes. Hang planters with these plants around areas where you spend a lot of time. Crush the leaves to release the scents that irritate mosquitoes.
  • Hang bat houses and bird feeders in your yard. Mosquitoes are attracted to the warm, moist houses and feeders, and bats and birds eat the mosquitoes.
  • Add between 50 and 100 fish such as gambusia to your pond. They feed on mosquito larvae. Attract dragonflies that eat mosquito larvae and adults.
Aside from these ways, there is another way to repel mosquitoes, that is, by wearing a natural repellent bracelet. It is DEET free & safe for kids (wrists / ankles) and babies (attach to ankle or baby stroller). Wear it on your wrist, ankle or attach it to your backpack. It is easy to use and you won’t even notice it’s there. It holds 1 Repeller Band Refill (15 Days Of Protection Per Refill). It contains an all-natural,non-spray & deet-free repellent formula. This formula offers the best balanced proportion of 11 natural, organic essential oils and repels mosquitoes and fleas, gnats, ticks, ants and more! DIY Mosquito Garlic Barrier

Garlic is a natural repellent that is useful in discouraging insects from an outdoor area. Just as many insects including mosquitoes avoid naturally growing garlic, they will also avoid created garlic barriers. Homemade garlic sprays are made with garlic cloves and other ingredients to create a liquid that is applied around decks, patios and other areas to ward off mosquitoes that often carry potentially harmful diseases.

  • Place 3 ounces of chopped and minced fresh garlic in a container. Add 2 tsp. of mineral oil to the garlic and seal the container. Allow the oil and garlic to set and mix for 24 hours.
  • Fill another container with 1 pint of water. Add 1/4 ounce of liquid soap to the water in the container. Cover the container and shake to mix the water and soap thoroughly.
  • Pour the soap and water mixture into the container with the oil and garlic. Slowly add the soapy water and stir with a spoon to mix with the oil and garlic.
  • Place a piece of an old nylon stocking over a container to use as a strainer. Pour the combined ingredients through the stocking to strain out the minced garlic pieces.
  • Measure 1 1/2 tbsp. of the garlic oil into a spray bottle with a measuring spoon. Add 1 pint of water to the oil in the bottle. Place the spray top on the bottle and shake to mix. Spray the oil and water mixture onto the landscape and lawn around an outdoor sitting area to ward off and control mosquitoes.

Keeping Mosquitoes Out of Rain Barrels

Rain barrels are used to collect rainwater from rooftops, which can be used for watering gardens, washing cars or flushing toilets. This method of harvesting rainwater cuts down the cost of water usage in the household and conserves water. However, rain barrels with standing water can also become rich breeding grounds for mosquitoes. There are ways you can keep mosquitoes out of rain barrels and help reduce mosquito breeding sites.

The things you'll need are minnows or goldfish, mosquito dunks, plastic mesh window screen, cheesecloth and mosquito larvicide.

Empty rain barrels every four to six days. Female mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water. It only takes seven to 14 days for the egg to emerge into an adult mosquito.

Add mosquito-eating fish into the rain barrels. Minnows or goldfish, for example, are known to eat mosquito larvae. Provide adequate ventilation for the fish inside the barrel, or they'll die.

Use small portions of mosquito dunks. Buy the product from most garden supply stores. Mosquito dunks are bacterial larvicide that kill mosquito larvae. These dunks slowly release an active ingredient, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), that kills mosquitoes for 30 days or more. They are safe for your plants and don't harm pets or people.

Cover the rain barrel with fine screening. Screens keep mosquitoes out and prevent them from laying eggs into the water. Secure plastic mesh window screening over your rain barrel's openings. Add cheesecloth on top of the screen as an additional filter.

Have an overflow hole on the rain barrel to keep the water level below the screen. Mosquitoes can breed in the water between the screen and the top of the water surface if the rain barrel is full to the top.

Aside from these, a good insect repellent band is also a good option. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. Treating Mosquito Bites on a Baby

Babies with exposed skin outdoors are at risk for mosquito bites. Mosquitoes frequently bite areas such as the neck, hands and ankles. The bites can cause uncomfortable itching and swelling, which can be difficult for a baby to deal with, especially a young infant who is unable to communicate. Remedies that work for adults may be unsafe to use on babies, so special precautions need to be taken when treating mosquito bites on an infant.

With just soap and water, cold washcloth, ice pack, baking soda paste, calamine lotion and nail clippers, you can protect your bundle of joy from mosquito bites.

Clean the area where the mosquito bit the baby with warm, soapy water. This will soothe the baby and remove any blood left by the biting mosquito.

Apply a cold washcloth to the bite to relieve itching and reduce swelling. An ice pack will also work to reduce discomfort, but wrap a towel or washcloth around the ice pack to prevent the ice from being too cold on the baby's skin.

Apply Calamine lotion to the bite to stop itching. Create a thick paste with baking soda and water if lotion is not available. Apply a small amount to the affected area only.

Cut the baby's fingernails to keep the child from scratching the bite open. Bloody, exposed mosquito bites are at greater risk for becoming infected. Scratching the bite could also cause bacteria from under the baby's nails to get into the mosquito bite. Clipping the baby's nails will also prevent the baby from getting a scar.

Monitor the bites for 24 hours, checking for excessive swelling or drainage. Continue to apply cold washcloths and lotion for as long as the baby appears to be uncomfortable. The bites may take weeks to disappear completely.

Keeping Hornets & Wasps Away

Wasps and hornets are bothersome, yet necessary, insects. But even if they are an important part of our ecosystem, nothing is quite as annoying as hornets and wasps flying around your yard while you’re trying to enjoy a day outside. In addition, these insects may pose a health risk—hornet and wasp stings can hurt quite badly, and some people are allergic to these stings. If you need to rid your garden of hornets and wasps, choose an eco-friendly method rather than using a commercial toxic insecticide.

Materials
  • Empty spray bottle
  • Duct tape
  • ½ oz. citronella oil
  • 1/8 oz. pennyroyal oil
  • ¼ oz. lavender oil
  • 1/8 oz. tea tree oil
  • 1/8 oz. jojoba oil
  • Empty 2-liter soda bottle
  • Sharp knife
  • Bait (beer, fruit juice or wine, for example)
Repellent Spray
Fill a clean, empty spray bottle with ½ oz. citronella oil, 1/8 oz. pennyroyal oil, ¼ oz. lavender oil, 1/8 oz. tea tree oil and 1/8 oz. jojoba oil. These essential oils can be purchased at most health food stores or pharmacies.

Shake the bottle well to thoroughly combine the ingredients.

Spray the mixture around the yard, on outdoor furniture, and even on clothing to deter hornets and wasps.

Hornet and Wasp Trap
Thoroughly rinse out an empty 2-liter soda bottle with plain water.

Cut the top off of the bottle. Use a sharp knife and make the cut carefully at the point where the sides of the bottle begin to even out with the width of the bottle. On most 2-liter soda bottles, this point is just above the label.

Place bait in the bottom of the bottle. Beer, sugary soda, fruit juice, and wine are some examples of good wasp and hornet bait. Place about 2 inches of bait into the bottom of the bottle.

Situate the top part of the bottle that you cut off upside down into the bottom part of the bottle (without the cap). Make sure the two pieces fit snugly with one another. Apply a few pieces of duct tape along the edges if the pieces are not snug.

Place the trap in places you’ve seen wasps. The idea is for the wasps and hornets to fly down into the funnel of the trap to get to the bait and drown before they can get out.

To prevent hornets and wasps, a good natural repellent product to use is the Repeller Bug Band. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. Marigolds are Mosquito Repellents

Mosquitoes. The name itself brings an itch to the skin and a frown to the face. Not only do they bite, and suck your blood, they leave an itchy welt and can even carry diseases like the Nile virus. Festive outdoor parties can be ruined by the presence of these pesky insects, but spraying chemicals on your friends and family isn’t the most pleasant thing to do either.Using plants like the marigold can not only help repel mosquitoes but provide bursts of colors throughout your yard or patio. It’s unpleasant smell helps deter those tiny skin-nibblers and is an easy and inexpensive alternative to poisonous chemicals. Many insect repellents use a compound called Pyrethrum, which is found in marigold. This is what makes the marigold plant so effective in naturally repelling these pests. Here’s how to go naturally mosquito-free with marigolds.

Using Marigolds to Keep Mosquitoes Away

Pot them up. Marigolds come in lots of big bright colors like orange and yellow, and come in a variety of bloom sizes, so mix them up by potting up five large pots for an average patio or large and medium sized pots for a vaster space. You can intersperse them amongst your other patio flowers to add variety.

Create a boundary-border. Use the smaller variety of marigolds like the French marigold and Queen Sophia to edge your flower or vegetable gardens. This will provide a boundary that will help discourage mosquitoes from coming around while you are weeding or simply walking to and from your home.

Place near windows and doorways. This is an important step. Fill your window boxes with Golden Gate marigolds and pot up a few larger varieties like the African marigold near the doorways to help keep the blood suckers from coming into your home and buzzing around you at night. Pot up a couple to put on the bedside tables at your cabin to keep your vacation itch-free.

Another good way to prevent mosquitoes is by wearing a natural repellent bracelet, such as the Repeller Bug Band. It is a DEET free repellent & safe for kids (wrists / ankles) and babies (attach to ankle or baby stroller). Wear it on your wrist, ankle or attach it to your backpack. Make Your Own Mosquito Trap

Mosquitoes carry diseases and illnesses to humans and animals. Humans can contract West Nile Virus, malaria and encephalitis from a mosquito bite. A mosquito bite can cause heartworms in dogs. Mosquitoes breed in areas where water is standing, so you should make sure there aren’t any areas of standing water around your home. Another way to reduce the mosquito population around your home is to make several mosquito traps, and place them in areas where you have seen mosquitoes.

Materials
  • Duct tape
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2-liter plastic bottle
  • Knife
  • Black paper
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 packet yeast
  • Cooking thermometer
  • Microwave
  • Cooking spoon
Procedures
  1. Place the bowl on a flat surface, and add 1 cup of water. Place the bowl in the microwave, and cook on high for two minutes. Remove from microwave.
  2. Add 1 cup of sugar to the bowl, and stir with the cooking spoon to dissolve the sugar. Put the bowl in the microwave and cook for 60 seconds. Remove the bowl from the microwave.
  3. Add the remaining 2 cups of water to the bowl, and stir the mixture until completely blended. This will make light-colored syrup.
  4. Measure 6 inches down from the top of the 2-liter drink bottle, draw a line around the bottle at the 6-inch mark, and cut the bottle apart at the line. The top part that you cut off will resemble a funnel.
  5. Pour the syrup into the bottom half of the drink bottle. Check the temperature of the syrup with the cooking thermometer. It needs to be between 90 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. If it isn’t, wait until it cools before moving to the next step.
  6. Open the packet of yeast and sprinkle it across the top of the syrup. Stir the yeast into the syrup.
  7. Flip the top part of the bottle upside down, and put it into the bottom half of the bottle. It will fit snugly into the bottle. Duct tape the sides, so it won’t come apart.
  8. Put a piece of black paper around the bottle, and tape it in place.
  9. Set the bottle in a place with mosquitoes, and let it stand. Mosquitoes will go in, but can’t escape. Change the liquid in the bottle about once a month.

Bergamot Benefits

Even If the plant had nothing but its beauty to recommend it, wild bergamot would still be worth growing. The narrow tubular flowers, which bloom from July through September, range from maroon to magenta to lilac In color and resemble a somewhat disheveled chrysanthemum atop a two-foot high, erect stalk.

Since the herb is a member of the mint family, it has its relatives' square, hollow stem, shallow, dense root system and paired leaves, which are tinged with reddish-purple on their "under" surfaces.

The pretty plant — though not choosy as to where it grows — does prefer "wet feet" and partial shade. You should know, also, that growing bergamot from seed is a slow process, so it's best to start your crop with root cuttings. Simply divide the roots — at any time from early spring until late fall — remove any woody or blackened portions, and set the runners out 18 Inches apart.

In order to maintain a healthy stand of flowers, this resetting should be done every three years. if, however, you feed your plants with compost In the fall, your "patch" can be left in the same spot (and will produce abundantly) for a good bit longer. Also, If you cut the plant back after the first bloom, It will produce an additional "harvest" during the same growing season.

Apart from Its beauty, bergamot functions as one of many flowers that attract hummingbirds and is a good companion plant for tomatoes. What's more, a leaf or two — tucked in a hat or pocket — will help repel pesky mosquitoes and gnats.

When harvested, bergamot is excellent for potpourri and dried flower arrangements, it makes a great garnish in wine cups and fruit punch, adds zing to lemonade and apple jelly and can also be used to flavor salads.

Repelling Mosquitoes with these Plants

Various herbs have been used for centuries to help keep mosquitoes from landing on skin and biting. However, over the last century with the emergence of new products containing synthetic chemicals such as DEET, many common herbs with insect repelling qualities are no longer being used. However, plants can be used to repel biting insects.

To keep away mosquitoes during picnics outdoors burn Citronella candles. Lemon grass, Cymbopogan nardus, a course grass-like plant, contain Citronella oils. As well as its essential oil repelling insects it also may help to deter unwanted cats in the garden. Burning candles with wicks saturated with the herb, myrrh is also quite effective at keeping many insects away. Egyptians used myrrh as a fumigant.

Indoors try placing the scented geranium, Pelargonium citrosum Vanieenii at strategic locations such as near doors and windows. "Vanieenii" has a good reputation for warding off bugs. Many other scented geraniums besides "Vanieenii" also contain Citronella oils which help repel insects.
If insects such as mosquitoes have already become a problem many herbs can be used directly on the skin as repellents. Infusions of 50% Chomomile and 50% Elder leaves dubbed on skin are effective for up to 20 minutes. Infusions are much like making tea, boiling water is poured over the herb and the herb/water mixture is then left to steep for 10 to 15 minutes. The remaining liquid is strained and used as the repellant.

As well as infusion, other properties of herbs such as their essential oils can be used as repellents. Essential oils such as Lavender, Tea tree oil and Citronella from the stone root, Collinsonia canadensis an be worn on the skin and in hair to effectively keep mosquitoes away. It is best to dilute these powerful essential oils in a little olive oil and test this new mixture on a patch of skin before applying to ones entire body. Pennyroyal has also been used throughout history to repel insects. However, the oil of Pennyroyal is extremely toxic and should only be used by certified herbalist.
In the event mosquitoes were not repelled effectively, many herbs can be used to relieve the itching from bites. Wash insect bites with a Tea tree oil based soap and rinse with witch hazel. Next, dab freshly washed bites and lemon juice or cider vinegar. Before bedtime, apply lavender oil or cinnamon oil by rubbing on the affected area. As well as helping repel mosquitoes these oils also take away itching from bites.

Another quick and simple tip to prevent mosquito bites would be wearing a natural insect repellent bracelet such as the Repeller Bug Band. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. 2 Natural Predators that Repel Mosquitoes

Although the tiger mosquito does not have many predators, we can encourage the ones it does have.

Bats - Bats are one of the mosquito's most deadly beasts of prey. At night, bats come to life and flit through the air, using their sonar-like echolocation to hunt the tiny insects. Bat houses, like bird houses, offer bats a safe place to live. Setting one up in your yard will encourage these flying mammals to take up residence there and help control your mosquito population. Bat houses are wooden structures that look like plain boxes. There is a shallow opening on the bottom where the bats can enter. The small dark boxes imitate bat's natural dwellings, like small caves and hollow trees. Some insect eating bats can catch up to 600 bugs in only an hour! To dispel any myths and misgivings about bats, there are only three species which consume blood and they all live in Central and South America. Insect feeding bats have no interest in humans, and their swooping behavior is simply the dive they make to catch bugs, not to attack people. Bat houses can be easily constructed by hand (look at this handy site with step by step bat house instructions) or bought pre-made at a hardware or home store. Install your bat house high in a tree, on a tall pole, or directly onto the side of your house or other building. The box should be placed at least 15 to 20 feet off the ground and in a sunny spot. It usually takes up to one year for a bat colony to settle into a new bat box. Remember never to spray pesticides or other chemicals near your bat house. (On a side note, bat droppings, called guano, are an excellent nitrogen-rich fertilizer.)

Birds - Many birds are avid mosquito hunters. A few popular species include the chickadee, wren, and purple martin. Bird houses that are specialized for each species can be bought online, or built by hand. Plant brightly colored flowers near the bird houses, such as black eyed susan, and wait for a family to take up nest!

If you live near a lake or pond that is plagued by mosquitos, encourage the habitation of pond-living predators such as frogs, toads, damselflies, dragonflies, and larvae-eating fish. All of these water loving predators consume most small insects, including mosquitos.

Lavender as a Mosquito Repellent

Lavender is a flowering, fragrant herb that belongs to the mint family Lamiacea. Lavenders are native to the Mediterranean region and southeast regions of India. The oil extracted from the blue-violet flowers has both medicinal and antiseptic uses.

Lavender oil has a calming scent and widely used in the medicines for reducing tension, migraine, anxiety, and depression. Its aroma reduces nerve exhaustion and also induces sleep. This oil is used as a remedy for muscular pain, and widely used in the treatment of respiratory and urinary disorders. Lavender oil is also used for the treatment of hypertension and digestive problems. Another important use is as a repellant against harmful insects.

Using Lavender Oil to Repel Mosquitoes

Lavenders are widely used as a repellent against mosquitoes and other insects. The advantage of using lavender oil over other chemical repellants is that it is completely natural and also has a sleep-inducing effect. It also nourishes the skin with no side-effects unlike other synthetic repellants. Moreover, the aroma is also pleasant when compared to the strong-smelling mosquito repellant creams.

To stay safe from mosquitoes, you can directly apply the oil to the ankles, wrist, or feet. The mode of application is similar to that of a perfume. Mix the lavender oil with aqueous cream and then apply to the desired parts for more sensitive skin.

Mixing lavender oil with citronella and eucalyptus oils and then spraying this mixture is an effective means to repel mosquitoes. This mixture is also used in the candle production. This herb can also be planted in your garden as it keeps the surrounding areas of the house free from mosquitoes and other unwanted insects.

Aside from using lavender oil, you can also wear a natural mosquito repellent bracelet. The Repeller Bug Band is DEET free & safe for kids (wrists / ankles) and babies (attach to ankle or baby stroller). Wear it on your wrist, ankle or attach it to your backpack. It is easy to use and you won't even notice it's there. With this product, you get real protection without the use of dangerous sprays or powders!

5 Ant Sting Natural Methods

In the past we presented you with 5 effective ways to treat ant bites. Now we will expand and present you with an additional 5 methods you can use for treating ant bites.

Method 1: Vegetables and fruits are a great natural remedy for treating ant bites. For example, you can pour lemon juice directly onto an ant bite. The acidity from the lemon counteracts and neutralizes the acid in the bite. A slice of cucumber on the bite is also helpful, as well as a little bit of onion or a clove or garlic.

Method 2: 20 Mule Team Borax is another great way to treat ant bits. You can soak the affected area in a tub of warm water diluted with 3 cups of the Borax. This should draw the poison out of the bite. Borax actually comes from the mineral ‘boron’. So, in effect, you are just soaking in a mineral bath.

Method 3: Aloe Vera – especially straight from the plant. If you can get your hands on one, just cut a leaf open, and squeeze its juice directly onto your ant bite. If you can’t get a leaf, the next best thing is pure aloe vera gel you get from a drugstore. It should draw any infection out of the bite.

Method 4: Take a pill of Benadryl if you have an allergic reaction to the bite (but make sure you don’t have any adverse reactions to Benedryl itself). A 25 milligram dose of Benadryl should do the job for any allergic reaction to the bite.

Method 5: Make a thick paste out of baking soda and water. Apply it straight onto the ant bite. Besides taking care of the pain, this paste should also help with the itching. This is also a great way to treat bee stings.

Another ant prevention technique is by using natural repellents. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. It contains an all-natural,non-spray & DEET-free formula. This formula offers the best balanced proportion of 11 natural, organic essential oils and repels mosquitoes and fleas, gnats, ticks, ants and more! With this product, you get real protection without the use of dangerous sprays or powders!

Scorpion Sting Tips for Children

If a scorpion stings you or your child, follow the suggestions below. Healthy adults may not need further treatment, and these tips can help keep children safe until they see a doctor:

  • Clean the wound with soap and water.
  • Apply cold compresses to the affected area to ease the pain and slow the venom's spread. This is most effective in the first two hours after a sting occurs.
  • Keep the affected limb raised to the level of your heart.
  • Try to stay calm and quiet so that the poison spreads more slowly.
  • Don't consume food or liquids if you're having difficulty swallowing.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Motrin IB, Chlidren's Motrin, others), can help ease discomfort. But avoid using narcotic pain medications, which can suppress breathing.

  • Check your or your child's immunization records to be sure a tetanus vaccine is up to date. Scorpions tend to avoid contact. If you live in an area where scorpions are common, prevent chance meetings by doing the following:

  • Remove trash, logs, boards, stones, bricks and other objects that would make good hiding places for scorpions from around your home.
  • Keep grass closely mowed, and prune bushes and overhanging tree branches, which can provide a path to your roof for scorpions.
  • Caulk cracks, install weatherstripping around doors and windows, and repair torn screens.
  • Don't store firewood inside your house.
  • When hiking or camping, wear long sleeves and pants and check your sleeping bag for scorpions before you crawl in. Check your clothing and shake out your shoes before you put them on. Always wear shoes.
  • When traveling in other countries — especially if you're camping or staying in rustic accommodations — shake out your clothing, bedding and packages often and sleep under a mosquito net. If you have a known allergy to insect stings, carry an epinephrine injector, such as EpiPen.

  • If you do find a scorpion near your home or campsite, use tongs to gently remove the scorpion away from people. To prevent scorpion stings, a good natural repellent product to use is the Repeller Bug Band. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. It contains an all-natural,non-spray & deet-free repellent formula. This formula offers the best balanced proportion of 11 natural, organic essential oils and repels mosquitoes and fleas, gnats, ticks, ants and more! Tips for Repelling Aphids

Aphids frequently carry viruses which infect a host plant as the insect feeds. Such viruses are often lethal to crops like potatoes, citrus fruits, and grains. Furthermore, the honeydew secreted by aphids as they feed creates a favorable environment for sooty molds which spread quickly to coat the leaves of a plant, depriving it of sunlight.

While an aphid infestation may start out slow, aphids reproduce quickly and a colony of these pests can easily destroy entire crops if left untreated. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep aphids in check using all natural and organic means that won’t compromise the health of your garden or your family.

    1. Physical Removal

For minor infestations of aphids, it may be possible to physically remove the insects from your plants. Don a pair of gardening gloves and brush or pinch the pests from stems and leaves. If the infestation is contained to one or two stalks or branches, prune off the affected portion(s) and drop them into a bucket of soapy water to kill the aphids.

    2. Water Pressure

It is possible to spray aphids off of plants with the simple application of a garden hose. While this method may harm younger, more fragile host plants, it can be quite effective at controlling small aphid populations on more robust and well-established plants.

    3. Soap and Water

The basic nature of mild household detergents makes them perfect for getting rid of mild to moderate aphid infestations. Dilute a few tablespoons of dish soap in a small bucket of lukewarm water and use a sponge or spray bottle to apply the mixture to plants where aphids have taken hold. Upon contact, the soap will dissolve the waxy protective coating from aphids’ bodies, dehydrating and eventually killing the insects without harming the plant. Remember to also treat the undersides of leaves where aphid eggs and larvae may be hiding!

***It is important to note that most forms of soap will also kill beneficial insects. Use caution when applying this treatment to your plants, as killing off populations of natural predator insects such as ladybugs, hoverflies, and lacewings will leave the door wide open for new colonies of aphids to move in.***

    Repelling Garden Insects Naturally

It’s often easy to tell that something is eating up your organic garden, but identifying and eliminating the trouble-maker without using dangerous chemicals can be a more complicated, and often frustrating, process. Below are some of the most common pests along with an eco-friendly way to eliminate them.

    Spider Mites

Spider Mites are another tiny little pest, that you may not be able to see right away (you may, however, see tiny little webs on your plants – a sure sign of spider mites). They live on the undersides of the leaves, sucking the sap out, eventually causing them to look very sickly with curled, yellow leaves.

To get rid of them, mix one part rubbing alcohol with two parts water and mist it on infested plants – this will kill them on contact. Make sure to spray in the evening so that the alcohol can evaporate before the sun comes up.

    Beetles

There are so many kinds of beetles to attack your garden that it can be overwhelming. Some common troublemakers include: vine weevils, Mexican bean beetles, Colorado potato beetles, flea beetles, asparagus beetles and Japanese beetles. For some, you can tell by the name where they are most likely to strike, but several types of beetles are willing to go after any edible crop. The good thing about beetles is you’ll be able to see them going after your plants, and hopefully put a stop to it quickly.

To eliminate most beetles, all you need is a bucket filled with water and a tiny bit of soap. You can either hand-pick the beetles from your garden and drop them into the water, or pour the soapy water over infested plants. Either way the soap will kill the beetles and make it harder for future invaders to crawl onto your veggies. If the soap and water method isn’t getting rid of all of them, spraying plants with an All-Natural, Neem oil based spray will get rid of the rest.

    Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers will take big bites out of the leaves of almost any edible plant. They can quickly and easily travel around your yard using their powerful legs and wings, so they’re one of the toughest pests to get rid of completely.

One of the only ways to eliminate Grasshoppers without using nasty poisons is to use a Hot Pepper Wax Spray, which can also be effective for aphids, whiteflies, spider mites and scale. Hot Pepper Wax Spray is generally made from cayenne peppers, and it works by making the leaves of your plants so spicy that the bugs won’t want anything to do with them. Just make sure not to use it too close to harvest or you’ll experience a bit of the spiciness yourself!

Also, a simple tip would be wearing a repellent bracelet such as the Repeller Bug Band. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. Tips for Insect Repelling

The days are finally getting longer, the snow is (slowly!) beginning to melt, and spring officially arrives in just a few days! While the prospect of warmer weather has us all a bit giddy, we can’t forget the unwelcome intruders that tag along with the sunny summer weather.

Yes, we are talking about insects, and everybody knows that they can be a huge nuisance. However, using chemical products to keep them away is not on the top of everyone’s wish list. Here are ways in repelling insects naturally:

    Wear Light Clothing

While you are probably already wearing light clothing, since it’s summertime and all, consider wearing light COLORED clothing as well! Mosquitoes are for some reason attracted to dark colored clothing, so switching up your fashion choices might actually keep the bugs away!

    Relax

Calm down, you’re drawing the bugs! Seriously, though! When we stress, or sweat, our bodies release hormones and pheromones that the bugs are attracted to! So, try not to exercise outside, and if you need to stress out, do it inside in the a/c!

    Soybean Oil

Soybean oil is usually used in cooking, but recent research has shown that it is also a great insect repellent! In a recent study, experts found that insect repellents made with soybean oil kept the mosquitoes away for an astonishing 94.6 minutes, which was WAY more than any other plant based repellent that was tested!

    Citronella

Citronella is a lemony grass-like plant that bugs absolutely hate! You probably already know about it, since it’s found in almost all outdoor candles, torches and lanterns. It is one of the most powerful natural insect repellents! You can buy or make the candles, but you can also plant citronella grass outside of your home, and you can buy the oil and rub it directly on your skin!

Aside from this, a good insect repellent band is also a good option.

    Spiders out!: Repelling Spider

Let’s be completely honest. Nobody REALLY likes spiders. Even if they are completely harmless little things, nobody really wants spiders hanging around inside their house.

But, how do you repel spiders naturally without hurting them, and without exposing your family to any potentially harmful chemicals?

    Mint Them Out

Did you know that spiders HATE peppermint? Most people don’t! An easy way to keep spiders from invading your space is to fill a spray bottle with peppermint essential oil and water, and then spray it around your home. Plus, your home will smell great!!

    Clean It Up

The cheapest and most organic way to repel spiders naturally is probably not the easiest! Keeping your home neat, tidy and free of dust or webs is the best way to keep spiders from moving in. Regular vacuuming, dusting, and de-cluttering will keep any insects from making themselves at home!

    Use Vinegar

White vinegar has about five trillion uses around the house (look it up!), and repelling spiders is one of them! Repelling spiders with vinegar is much like repelling them with peppermint oil, in that you fill a spray bottle with vinegar and water, and spray all the cracks and crevices around your home.

Enlist The Help Of A Furry Friend

Cats are a great spider deterrent! Four legged furry friends can be great hunters and will definitely not let a spider crawl across the floor without going on the prowl and taking care of business!

Another good way to prevent mosquitoes is by wearing a natural repellent bracelet. Oils as Mosquito Bite Remedies

First you catch a glimpse of a mere wisp of movement out of the corner of your eye. You swipe at it, but hit only air as the tiny predator deftly evades your hand and disappears. Then comes the high-pitch buzzing in your ear. Over and over you attempt to swat it away. Sadly, your efforts are all in vain. Before you know it, you’re covered in pink, swollen, itchy bites.

Yes, we are talking about mosquitoes, and everybody knows that they can be a huge nuisance. However, using chemical products to keep them away is not on the top of everyone’s wish list.

    Peppermint

Apply crushed fresh peppermint leaves over mosquito bites or dab on a couple of drops of peppermint essential oil for fast relief. The cooling oils naturally present in peppermint temporarily overload nerves to stop pain and itching.

Fresh peppermint and peppermint oil also make excellent repellent against mosquitoes, ants, spiders and many other creepy crawlies!

    Tea Bags

Gently rub a cool, damp tea bag over bites. The natural tannins in the leaves will draw out excess fluid to reduce pain and swelling.

    Tea Tree Oil

Last, but definitely not least, dab a couple of drops of tea tree oil onto bites for quick and effective relief. Tea tree oil is a powerful anti-microbial in addition to being anti-inflammatory, meaning that your skin will heal faster with less chance of infection.

If you’re ready to try tea tree oil, you can purchase it along with lemon, peppermint, and three other popular essential oils.

Aside from this, a good mosquito repellent band is also a good option. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. Mosquitoes, including ticks, fleas, gnats, etc., will hate you for wearing this band. It has a formula that offers the best balanced proportion of 11 natural, organic essential oils and repels mosquitoes naturally, fleas, gnats, ticks, ants and more! Natural Ways to Avoid Mosquito

I’m sure everyone reading this right now has experienced the redness, the swelling and the uncontrollable itching that comes with a mosquito bite. It’s enough to ruin any barbecue or picnic!

Many people turn to store bought insect repellents to keep mosquitoes away, but these insect repellents often contain a toxic pesticide that is dangerous to human health. This pesticide is known as DEET.

Heavy exposure to DEET has been linked to memory loss, headache, weakness, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, tremors and shortness of breath in humans and is particularly toxic to children.

    “Bug Off” Mosquito Repellent Spray

Stevie from GardenTherapy.ca has devised a fantastic “Bug Off” spray recipe that includes mosquito repelling essential oils such as citronella, lemongrass and eucalyptus. Spray this on your skin before heading outside.

    Bug Repellent Sunscreen

This sunscreen is multi-purpose – it protects from harmful UV sun rays like any good sunscreen, but it also repels bugs, including mosquitoes.

On top of that it’s all natural and contains none of the toxic chemicals found in many over-priced store-bought sunscreens.

    Throw Rosemary On The Barbecue

Mosquitoes often strike while we are barbecuing, but this simple trick will turn your barbecue into a natural mosquito repellent, while also adding delicious flavour to your food!

Throw a few stalks of rosemary on the hot coals to give off a mosquito repelling aroma.

To prevent mosquito bites, a good natural repellent product to use is the Repeller Bug Band. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. Hygiene and Preventing Ticks

It's summertime, which means outdoor play, hiking, gardening — and tick bites. The creepy crawlies tend to latch on during the summer months and these arachnids are ubiquitous throughout the U.S. People can take steps to avoid the nasty critters, beyond the old-standby advice to cover up and avoid tall grass, experts say. Here are hygiene tips to prevent these ticks:

    1. Cover up

Covering up can prevent ticks from latching on, said Holly Donohoe, a researcher at the University of Florida who studies the health risks of travel and sports.

"Tucking pants into socks is a totally nerdy-looking thing, but in this case it can save you the suffering from a tick-borne disease later on," Donohoe said.

Of course, that advice may be hard to follow during peak tick season, Stafford said.

"In the summer months nobody is going to do that, it's too hot. I don't. I'll be protected from ticks but keel over from heat stroke," he said. Other prevention measures may be more useful when the mercury rises.

    2. Lighten up

The clothes people wear should also be light, said Kathryn Berger, a disease ecologist at the University of Calgary in Canada.

"Nymphal ticks are about the size of a poppy seed, so if you wear lighter-colored clothing like light socks, lighter-colored pants, you're going to have an easier time identifying them."

    3. Quick dry clothing

Because ticks are so vulnerable to drying out, the hitchhiking parasites can be killed by giving clothing a quick whirl in the dryer on high heat for five minutes, Mather said.

Ticks can survive the wash, and people who have to both wash and dry their clothes may just toss their clothing into a pile for later. It's better to do a quick dry cycle immediately than to let the tick linger, he said.

    4. Shower and inspect

After high-risk activities, people should immediately take their clothes off and do a tick inspection and shower. People who are in the habit of showering immediately after outdoor activities are less likely to get Lyme disease, perhaps because they can catch any biting ticks before they've transmitted the disease, Stafford said.

After biting, ticks can take several hours to transmit Lyme disease, said Laura Kramer, the director of the Arbovirus Laboratory at the New York State Department of Health's Wadsworth Center.

A quick and simple tip would be wearing a natural tick repellent bracelet such as the Repeller Bug Band. The Repeller Bug Band is a natural insect repellent bug bracelet that is DEET-free and safe for kids. Bee Sting Tips

Having a bee sting is definitely no fun. If a stinger is left embedded in the body, then remove it as soon as possible. This should be the first step. Use whatever tools are immediately available to dig it out. You could use a knife, credit card, pliers, tweezers, or a needle. Sterilize the tool if possible, but do not waste time. For maximum absorption, clean the area with soap and water before applying remedies, otherwise the oils on the skin will repel them.

    Wasp and Hornet Stings

Vinegar - Wasp and hornet venom are powerful alkalines. Use an acid such as vinegar to neutralize them. It can be applied via a piece of cloth or bandaging. Make sure to keep the stings soaked for at least 15 minutes. Some vinegar will absorb through the skin, and it should greatly help eliminate the discomfort.

    Bee and Yellow Jacket Stings

Baking Soda - In the case of bee stings, baking soda will help to neutralize the acidic venom. Make a paste by combining baking soda with water. Leave this paste on the sting site for at least 15 minutes. Some of the dissolved baking soda will leach through the skin to neutralize the venom somewhat. After applying it, and cleaning the sting area of residue; a chamomile tincture may be repeatedly applied for any residual itching or swelling.

    Emergency Allergic Reactions

If there is difficulty breathing, extreme dizziness, or nausea after a sting, then there is a high probability that it triggered a dangerous allergic reaction. In these cases, we recommend quickly consuming a large (i.e. quadruple) dose of chamomile. Chamomile is related to ragweed, so those with ragweed allergies should skip this step. A large amount of echinacea is also strongly recommended, if available. If pulse irregularities are experienced, then try to take some taurine, even if that means just holding the powder in the mouth. Then immediately get to the nearest hospital. The allergic reaction may stop by the time you arrive at the hospital, but you should definitely make the trip in case it does not. In these unfortunate latter cases, a steroid injection may be required to save your life.

    Misinformation About Sting Remedies

Treating most bee, wasp, and hornet stings is easy, but that may be difficult to believe if you have spent any time researching this topic on the Internet. Researching natural treatments for bee, hornet, and wasp stings is revealing about how much misinformation there is on the Internet. Some of it is laughable.

To prevent bee stings, a good natural repellent product to use is the Repeller Bug Band. Natural Repellent: Nodding Onion

Nodding Onion (Allium cernuum Roth) is perennial, onion-smelling plant. Its stem ranges10-50 cm tall, round or flattened, curved down near the top, sometimes 2 or more successively produced from a single bulb. Bulbs are 1-2 cm thick, usually in clusters, with membranous outer layers with parallel fibres. Its leavers are basal with several per bulb, plane or concave-convex in cross section, 1-6 mm broad, shorter than the flower stem, entire or small-toothed on the edges, green during flowering, persistent at maturity.

Its flowers are several in a nodding umbel, the surrounding, membranous bract soon dropped. Stalks slender, 2-3 times the flower length, in fruit becoming stouter, elongating, and bending upward. Tepals 4-6 mm long, elliptic-ovate, blunt, entire or nearly so, pink or white, withering in fruit, the  midribs not thickened. Stamens projecting, anthers oblong. Ovary crested with 6 distinct, flattened processes, the style thread-like, projecting, stigma round, entire. Its flowering time is around June-July. Its fruits are capsules, 3-lobed, with 6 crests at tip, about 4 mm long. Seeds are dull black, with honey-comb pattern. It is widely distributed in moist to dry, open sites, plains to montane zone.

    Edible Uses:
Nodding onion is edible, and its bulbs were widely eaten by native peoples and European settlers, either raw, cooked or dried for winter. Being strongly flavored, it is mainly used as a flavoring. Cooking removes the strong smell and flavor, converting the sugar inulin to the more digestible fructose, and the bulbs become very sweet. The leaves are edible, raw or cooked. They have a delicious, strong-onion flavor, and are said to be very nice in salads. The flowers can be eaten raw or cooked. They have a delicious strong onion flavor, somewhat stronger than the leaves especially if the seeds are starting to set. They make a very decorative and tasty addition to the salad bowl.

    Medicinal Uses:
Nodding Onion was used medicinally by the Cherokee, Isleta, Kwakiutl, Makah, and Quinault Indians. The juice of the plant was given to children for hives and croup, as well as for colds and sore throat. A poultice of chewed plant parts was applied to the chest for pleurisy pains, croup, and otherwise applied externally for infections, sores and swellings. A poultice of warm onions was applied externally to throat for sore throat as well.

    Other Uses:
The juice of the plant has been used as a moth and mosquito repellent. The whole plant is said to repel insects and moles. It is definitely a mosquito repellent natural. The juice can be applied to exposed skin in order to repel mosquitos and other biting insects. It can be a good mosquito repellent for home.
